ReFa BABY SLEEPY Brushes, Explained: Heart, AILE or Aira?

Hand brushing a smiling baby with the heart-shaped ReFa BABY SLEEPY Heart brush

Three baby brushes in goat hair and beech wood, from Tokyo. One to hold, one to keep by the cot, one for the bag.

Most baby gifts are chosen in a hurry and forgotten by the second month. A brush is a different kind of present. It is small, it is quiet, and it gets used at the same slow moment every evening, which is why it tends to stay on the shelf rather than go in a drawer.

ReFa makes its BABY SLEEPY brush in three shapes: the palm-sized Heart, the long-handled AILE and the slim comb-style Aira. All three are open for pre-order. Here is how they differ and which one to give.

The Quick Answer

For the most giftable shape: the ReFa BABY SLEEPY Heart, palm-sized and rounded, about 68g.
For beside the cot or in the nursery: the ReFa BABY SLEEPY AILE, with a long curved handle, about 55g.
For the nappy bag: the ReFa BABY SLEEPY Aira, a slim comb-style brush at about 10g.

All three share the same 100% natural goat hair and natural beech wood, and each comes with its own pouch. The choice is about how you like to hold it and where it will live.

The Three Shapes

ReFa BABY SLEEPY Heart: the keepsake

The Heart is a rounded piece of beech that fits in the palm, with the goat hair set into the underside. Every edge is softened and the grain is smooth, so it looks like something you would leave out on a shelf. It is the one that reads as a gift the moment it is handed over.

Best for: a first gift, a baby shower, and anyone who wants the single most considered shape.
Limitations: at about 68g with no handle, it is the weightiest of the three and the least suited to a crowded bag.

ReFa BABY SLEEPY AILE: the one beside the cot

The AILE is an oval brush on a long, curved beech handle, about 170mm from end to end and 55g. The handle gives you something to hold, so the strokes stay slow and easy. ReFa designed it around the quiet hour before sleep, and it looks at home in a bassinet or a nursery basket.

Best for: a nursery set-up, and parents who like a proper handle.
Limitations: it is the longest of the three, so it takes more room in a bag than the Aira.

ReFa BABY SLEEPY Aira: the one that travels

The Aira is the slimmest: a single row of goat hair on a beech handle with a small heart at the end. It measures about 115mm and weighs about 10g, so it slips into a pocket or the corner of a nappy bag, and it slides into any gift bag without fuss.

Best for: a small, thoughtful gift, and families who are out and about.
Limitations: it is a slim comb-style brush rather than a full-size one, so it is the most understated of the three.

Our BABY SLEEPY picks: the Heart to give, the AILE for the nursery, the Aira to carry.

How They Differ From ReFa's Adult Brushes

The brushes you may know from ReFa, such as the HEART BRUSH and the AILE BRUSH, are built for dry adult hair, with ABS and elastomer bodies and three-level bristles that detangle and smooth. BABY SLEEPY is a different idea.

Here the material is the point. The bristles are 100% natural goat hair, chosen for a soft feel and a low brushing sound, and the handle is natural beech with every corner rounded. The fine hair is built to keep friction noise down, so a few slow strokes become part of the wind-down before sleep rather than a styling step.

Care

The brush section of each is washable. Follow the instruction manual from ReFa for use and care, and check its guidance before the first wash. The pouch is there to protect the brush from scratches and dirt between uses.

Why It Works as a Gift

It is a present for the baby and for the person holding them. ReFa describes BABY SLEEPY as a quiet touch that carries warmth: a few slow strokes over the head in the minutes before sleep. It arrives with a pouch, so it can be handed over as it is, and the pale beech and soft goat hair suit a shelf as easily as a bag.

Nothing about it is loud. For a baby shower, that is the appeal. It is the one gift on the table that will not be the third of the same thing.
