The ReFa Ion Care Brush is a scalp brush you use while you shampoo. Its ball-point bristles work through lathered hair to lift buildup from the scalp, and a plate at the centre of the head generates ions as you brush. There are two versions. What does the ReFa Ion Care Brush do?
It cleans your scalp during a normal shampoo, in the spot your fingertips never quite reach. ReFa designed the bristle layout around three steps. The rounded head fits the curve of your skull, with no bristles in the very centre so it sits flush. Bristles of different heights reach down between the hairs to the scalp. Ball-point tips then scrape away sebum and product buildup without scratching.
That is the whole ritual. Lather, then move the brush slowly from your hairline back towards the crown. It takes a minute, and it replaces the fingernail scrub most of us do without thinking. Afterwards you can use it to comb conditioner through your lengths, holding it by the handle for a lighter touch.
What do the ions actually do?
Less than the name suggests. ReFa says the plate at the centre of the brush generates ions, and that they care for your hair "for a silky soft, healthy look". It publishes no measured result beyond that, and we would rather tell you so than dress it up.
The part you can feel is the bristles. They reach the scalp in a way fingertips don't, and that is the real reason to buy this brush. Treat the ions as a finishing detail on a very good scalp brush, not as the headline.

More bristles does not mean a harder scrub. It means the pressure spreads across more points, so each one presses more softly. That is why the Premium feels plusher on the scalp while still cleaning thoroughly, and why the standard, with fewer and firmer bristles, feels more like a workout.
Choose the standard Ion Care Brush if...
...your hair is thick, your scalp runs oily, or you wear a lot of styling product. Fewer, firmer bristles mean each one presses more definitely, so the scrub carries through dense hair.
Best for: thick hair, oily scalps, anyone who likes a firm scalp massage.
Limitations: on a sensitive scalp or fine hair it can feel like more than you need. That is where the Premium comes in.
Choose the Ion Care Brush Premium if...
...your scalp is sensitive, your hair is fine, or you want this to feel like a small daily treat rather than a scrub. The flexible bristles bend on contact and still reach the scalp, so the clean is thorough without the sharpness.
Best for: sensitive scalps, fine hair, gifting.
Limitations: if you want a strong, defined scrub through very thick hair, the standard delivers it more directly.

How to use it in the shower
Both versions are made for wet hair. ReFa recommends using them while you shampoo and apply conditioner, and they can go under the blow dryer too. A few rules from ReFa worth keeping:
- Start gently. Too much pressure can hurt your scalp or the brush.
- Keep it under ten minutes, then give it an hour before the next session.
- Hold the head for a thorough shampoo. Hold the handle for a lighter pass with conditioner.
- Skip it on extensions, wigs or hair transplants. The bristles can catch and pull.
- Rinse it, shake it out, and stand it in the draining stand somewhere shaded and airy to dry.
On the Premium, ReFa also advises against forcing it through tangled or permed hair and against big circular strokes, which can tangle. Short, slow strokes from the hairline back are the way.
Is the Ion Care Brush worth it?
Yes, if you want a cleaner scalp as part of a routine you already do. It won't replace shampoo, it won't fix breakage, and it does nothing for dry hair between washes. What it does is make the wash itself more thorough, in a minute you were already spending.
